Walk - Taylor Square to Woolloomooloo Loop

Overview: Starting at Taylor Square, walk past the old Darlinghurst Gaol to Darlinghurst Rd. Walk down to the harbour at Woolloomooloo via William St and Forbes St. Return along Bourke St, Cathedral St, Crown St and Stanley St to walk through Little Italy. Finally, wind you way back up the hill via Riley St to Oxford St, arriving back at Taylor Square.

Start at Taylor Square on the corner of Oxford St and Bourke St where you will find a Growers' Market every Saturday from 8am to 1pm in front of the old Darlinghurst Gaol. Walk down Forbes St around the left side of the Gaol for the first gallery, which is inside this building.

NAS Gallery National Art School, Forbes St Darlinghurst ph 9339 8686 Hours Mon-Sat 11am-5pm   email: nasgallery@nas.edu.au    Exhibits a wide variety of art, including an end of year showcase of graduating students at the Art School.

Continue along Forbes St and turn right at the corner with Burton St. Walk along and turn left into Darley St for the next gallery.

Carry on to the Liverpool Street intersection, cross the road and turn left to view the next gallery around the corner.

Continue on to William St, then turn left to the next galleries.

Walk a bit further along William St to the lights at Forbes St. Cross there and walk all the way down Forbes St through historic Woolloomooloo to the harbour. Turn right into Cowper Wharf Rd for the next gallery just around the corner.

This is about halfway through the walk, and is a good place to take a refreshment break at one of the many eateries and watering holes nearby: Harry's Cafe de Wheels is just across the road, old pubs such as the Tilbury, the Woolloomooloo Bay and Bells Hotels line the waterfront, and many chic cafes and restaurants operate on the Finger Wharf.

To continue the walk, go back along Cowper Wharf Rd past the Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel and turn left into Bourke St for the next gallery.

Continue along Bourke St and turn right at Cathedral St, walking to the corner with Crown St where you can visit the next gallery.

Continue along Cathedral St and turn left on Riley St to the next gallery.

Continue along Riley St, turn left on William St then right into Crown St to the next gallery.

Continue up Crown St and turn right into the narrow Stanley Lane, then walk to the intersection with Riley St for the next gallery.

Coming out of the Watters Gallery, turn right up Riley St, then turn right into Stanley St for the next gallery.

Stanley Street Gallery 1/52-54 Stanley St East Sydney ph 9368 1142. Email via a form on the website. Features a continually changing calendar of works by emerging and established Australian and overseas artists.

Return to Riley St, cross over and walk through the Little Italy area. Here you will find Italian cafes and restaurants as well as the historic East Sydney Hotel, expertly restored to recreate the features of its 1856 origins.

Return to Riley St then turn left and walk up to the intersection with Liverpool St for the last gallery.
